Recently, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced plans to recall one million RAM pickups in the U.S. and over 200,000 more in Canada due to a computer glitch that could affect side air bags and seat belts.

While nothing has been confirmed, it is speculated that one fatality, two injuries, and two accidents may be related to the RAM’s computer issue.

Customers with RAM 1500 and 2500 pickups made between 2013 and 2016 and RAM 3500 pickups made between 2014 and 2016 are advised to schedule service appointments to have their computer modules inspected and reprogrammed.

Additionally, as many as 21,668 trucks in Mexico and 21,530 more worldwide may have been affected and should be brought in for inspection.

The company states that if these models experience a significant underbody impact, the faulty computer modules could activate the instrument-cluster warning light indicating the sensor has failed.

“The error code associated with the warning may temporarily disable side air bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment for that ignition cycle, which would then be unavailable in the event of a vehicle rollover,” according to FCA execs. Pretensioners reduce seat belt slack during impacts, thereby reducing forward movement of the occupant’s head and torso.
